A call for an escalation in violence

As Paris continues to burn, the patience of state officials wears thin. Luc Ferry, who was a Minister of Education in France says that to end this violence is with more violence. "Luc Ferry has demanded that police officers should start firing their weapons at demonstrators, claiming that killing them would 'put an end the violence'" (Greenberg, 2019). It just seems ironic that someone who claims to be a philosopher and was a Minister of Education is calling for violence. This guy hasn't been in office since the early 2000s, but this is still unsettling. President Macron is pledging anti-protesting laws which will ban any un-authorized protest. It sounds to me like the French government wants to censor it's people with what they can and can't protest about. The French Prime Minister Edouard Philippe challenges those who see things differently: "'Those who question our institutions will not have the last word,' said Mr. Philippe"(Greenberg, 2019). 80,000 police and gendarmerie, a kind of civil military, were patrolling the streets of France this weekend. Riots in the streets, water canons, looting, and fires for days and days. Signs are pointing to a state of emergency however the Prime Minister doesn't seem to think so.
