Chief Justice of Nigeria Suspended
By: Reagan Quynn
The suspension of Nigeria’s chief justice has raised concern among the international community. Judge Walter Onnoghen was suspended by Nigerian President Buhari only three weeks before the presidential elections are to take place on charges of allegedly failing to disclose personal assets prior to taking office. Buhari’s main opponent has suggested this is an act of dictatorship as the chief justice is a key player in settling election disputes, and opposition campaigns have paused in protest. Additionally, the United States, United Kingdom, and European Union have all expressed issue with Onnoghen’s removal.
