Australian Writer Detained in China

Amid the detention of two Canadian citizens, thought not officially connected, Australian writer Yang Hengjun is apprehended by Chinese officials due to being an alleged threat to national security. He was first detained in the 1990s but was released after two days. Australian diplomats called on China to be transparent in their investigation into Hengjun and, like the U.S. and Canada, Australia has demanded answers about the Canadian detainees. China's relations with the west have been deteriorating as reports of human rights violations and corruption become more common and this only fuels the rising tension.
