More Than 100 Migrants Die at Sea in Wreck Off Libya, Survivors Say
By: Gaia Painigiani
Migrants from Sudan and other parts of Africa, who try to enter
Europe by sea, often face many dangers, even before their sea journey begins. In
this tragic story, a helicopter sent by the Italian Navy was only able to
rescue three people out of 117 from the shipwreck. Those three survivors were
brought to a hospital on the Island of Lampedusa. Survivors confirm that their
inflatable boat departed from the town of Garabulli, Libya, and that, after ten
hours of their journey in the sea, the boat began to deflate and take on water.
Humanitarian workers continue their labor of rescuing people from the sea. Libya
tends to be the most common starting point in the journey to Europe for these
African immigrants. This truly represents a major immigration crisis and
European countries have had to shut their doors to them.
