America's "war on drugs" is still affecting Latin America

Since announcing the "war on drugs," Latin America has seen a rise in drug trafficking-related crime. Drug money has been used to pay for radical, armed factions, most notably in Colombia and with Pablo Escobar. In the early to mid 2000's, powerful cartels from Mexico entered Central America in countries like Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador, leading those places to be some of the most unsafe, violent countries in the world. "According to the Information System regarding Aggressions against Human Rights Defenders from 2016 to June 2018, 263 human rights defenders were assassinated, with a significant increase in the number of attacks being registered in 2018." Sixty politicians have been imprisoned in Colombia for their connections to illegal groups. Following civil wars in the 80's and 90's, hundreds of thousands of Latin Americans were killed or disappeared. Now, many caravans approaching the US-Mexico border are refugees fleeing this violence and hoping to find a better life for them and their families.
