France's health minister declared over the weekend that over 1,500 people died due to extreme heat this past summer. France experienced its highest temperatures in history when temperatures reached 114.6 degrees Fahrenheit (45.9 degrees Celsius) in a heat wave on June 25. Several other European countries, like Spain and Germany experienced record highs this past summer as well. Because temperatures this high are not seen, the number of deaths can be attributed to people not being well prepared to cool down.
