As Trump Tightens the US Border, Asylum Applicants Seek Refuge in Mexico, Elsewhere

While the United States continues to be the largest recipient of asylum seekers, several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize, have seen a huge surge in the amount of asylum applicants. Reasons for this increase include the US government's attempts to tighten the US-Mexico border, political discord in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and and gang violence and job shortages in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
