While the United States continues to be the largest recipient of asylum seekers, several Latin American countries, including Mexico, Costa Rica, Panama, and Belize, have seen a huge surge in the amount of asylum applicants. From 2012 to 2018, the US saw over 200% increase of asylum applicants, and in the same period of time, Mexico had over 3500% increase of asylum seekers. Reasons for this increase include the US government's attempts to tighten the US-Mexico border, political discord in Venezuela and Nicaragua, and and gang violence and job shortages in Guatemala, El Salvador, and Honduras.
