Trump abruptly cancelled a deal with the Taliban. This deal would have had U.S. troops withdraw from Afghanistan and discussions of peace would have started. This would be the first discussion of peace between the Taliban and the Afghan government since 2001. This is a very peculiar decision by the president because this war has been a mess since it started and it would benefit everyone if it just ended. However, since the president chose this other path, "many more Afghans, and probably more Americans, will die in this war." Also, a Taliban commander was questioned about his opinions on Trump's decision and he responded with "Our position is far better than in the past" and "Let's see who can win this war." This is very troubling because the Taliban seem to have no concerns with continuing the war as they are confident they can win it. They have said they plan to "step up their operations against Afghan and U.S.-led forces now that Washington has suspended talks" which can be devastating. There have already been so many casualties and resources dumped into this war by the U.S. that many people believe we should just get out of it. It isn't worth it anymore especially because there was a solution in sight. The Taliban have been gaining ground recently so they have even less incentive to back down or hold back from targeting Afghans and Americans.
