Indian Activist Arrested for Sharing Document That Supports Farmer Protests

In this article, Roy discusses a situation happening in India where a woman has been arrested for allegedly sharing an online tool kit. The government recently created new agricultural laws that has led to a great deal of protests from farmers, especially the poor ones. As a result, people, like environmental activist Disha Ravi, are being locked up for their participation in the protests. The online tool kit that Ravi supposedly worked on is simply a way for people to learn about the situation and how to help the farmers who are trying to repel the new laws. From my understanding of Roy’s description, the tool kit is completely harmless and just provides people with information. However, the authorities are not in favor of it, and if Ravi is proven to be a part of it, she could be facing time in prison. I personally do not understand why this is a big deal. Reading about this case makes me stop and think about how blessed I am to be living where I am. I am confident that the legal system in the United States would not allow a situation such as the one Ravi is in to get to the point where prison time is necessary. I believe the online tool kit would easily qualify as free speech and that there would be no issue. Sadly, this is not the case around the world, and Ravi is under prosecution for her opinions.
