Poland: Near-total abortion ban takes effect amid protests

Currently in Poland, the nation is experiencing one of the most strict abortion bans in Europe, which has triggered nationwide protests, the Women's Strike, for the past three months. The ban denies the right to terminate pregnancies where the fetus is badly deformed. This means that women in Poland either have to carry fetuses to full term even if they don't have fully formed lungs and brains or they have to have enough money to get an abortion abroad. Many human rights officials condemn the ban saying that it is limiting the rights of women and risking lives. The only justifications for abortion under this new law are if the woman's life or health is at risk or if the pregnancy results from rape or incest, however about 98% of legal abortions in 2019 were because of fetal malformations. The Polish constitutional court argues that allowing congenital defect abortions are unconstitutional because the Polish Constitution protects human life.
