Many Republican senators have called upon the Biden Administration to boycott the 2022 Beijing Olympics in China. They are arguing that this is an issue of human rights, based on the issue of how Uighur Muslims are being treated in China. The Trump Administration declared this as a genocide, and many Republicans are still backing that. Although earlier this month the Biden Administration stated they had no intentions to pull out of the Olympics this year, they now have stated that they have yet to make a decision on the issue. Republicans are also arguing how the coronavirus pandemic originated in China, and saying the United States should not cross borders to participate in the games. Boycotting, however, seems relatively ineffective in this scenario, and it seems that Biden Administration recognizes that, saying that a boycott would have relatively no negative effect on the athletes. Democrats are suggesting that instead of boycotting the Olympics, the United States communicates with China about human rights.
