The data on the efficacy of the Pfizer coronavirus vaccine coming out of Israel, which has vaccinated the most people per capita in the world, is very promising. Not only have Israeli officials said that the vaccine is 99% effective at preventing death, but new data shows that the vaccine is also 89.4% effective at preventing laboratory-confirmed infections. This is promising because 80% of the virus cases in Israel during the time period in which the study was conducted were of the more transmissible UK strain of the virus, meaning that this data shows that the Pfizer vaccine is effective against the newer strains. This data is adding to optimism that, with widespread vaccination, countries will be able to lift restrictions and reopen their economies safely.
