Iran rejected a European Union offer to arrange direct nuclear talks with the United States. This occurred after Iran said it wanted a guarantee first that the United States would lift some sanctions after the meeting. While Iran's rejection didn't kill all hope of direct negotiations, it does signal more tension in the coming days. Currently, France, the U.K. and Germany are working on a resolution they plan to present to the board of the International Atomic Agency next week that would censure Iran for its recent steps to expand its nuclear activities and its failure to cooperate with agency's probe into its nuclear work.
Iran's rejection demonstrates how International Relations is like a Chess Board. Each move is carefully made and one wrong move could lead to increased tensions and possible War in the International system. While, Iran's move does not signal overt hostility it does demonstrate that the United States and Iran will be "treading lightly" in the future concerning these talks about nuclear weapons. It will be interesting to watch how this relationship plays out.
