On January 11, 2015 Iran’s Justice Minister and Japanese
Ambassador agreed and signed an agreement on extradition of convicts. This
agreement allows both Iranian and Japanese prisoners to return back to their
homeland and spend the rest of their sentences there, only if they meet certain
conditions. Currently, there are 200 Iranian prisoners in Japan and four
Japanese prisoners in Iran. Both Iran and Japanese government are aiming to
facilitate the reintegration of prisoners by allowing them to serve time in
jail at their homeland. I think this agreement would be a great advantage
to both Iran and Japan, as they could reduce burden of the prison. This could
also help avoiding the troubles of language difference and cultural difference
that prisoners and prisons are currently having. I believe it would encourage
the prisoners to reintegrate if they could spend their sentences in their
homeland, rather than in foreign countries. In addition, by signing an
agreement, it could lead to strengthen the relationship between Iran and Japan.
