Is lack of democracy a problem for China?

This article outlines the incredible growth of China in the last 30 years, it indicates the brightness of China's economic future and applauds the amazing steps it has made as a world power. However it also refers to a topic that seems ironically related to Marxism, the fact that the price of such economic growth has been the social living conditions for much of its population. Not just those in poverty but those living in northern cities have undrinkable tap water, farmland is unsafe for crop cultivation, food safety is a constant concern. The article doesn't specifically say this but the chance for a societal uprising increases due to the substandard living conditions allowed by a non-people's government. So, "Is lack of Democracy a problem for China?" I think this is an interesting question, certainly China has been to most rapidly growing country since the 1980s and is the last superpower communist nation on the planet. Just in the last year it has brought a bigger percentage of its population out of poverty than ever before. Only time will tell how the country develops as globalization continues.
