Waves of Ukrainian Child Refugees at Risk of Human Trafficking

The group UNICEF has warned that the roughly 1.5 million child refugees of Russia's invasion of Ukraine are facing a higher risk of human trafficking. They state that the rise in displacement leads to an increased likelihood of children being separated from the rest of their families, be that by accident of by those in the business of trafficking and kidnapping. UNICEF is calling for surrounding European nations bringing in refugees to enforce and implement protections for families and children. This especially comes after 500 unaccompanied children were identified entering Romania from Ukraine between February 24 and March 17. UNICEF is also asking for every child to be screened under appropriate circumstances and evaluated to determine if they are accompanied or not, and if further help and protection is necessary.
