Migrant crisis: European Commission proposes asylum reforms
With the influx of migrants seeking asylum in European countries and the failures that have resulted from the current system, the EU is proposing reforms to their current policy. The current policy allows countries in the EU to send migrants back to the EU state in which they first entered. This policy is hurting Greece and Italy because a majority of migrants entering the EU enter through these countries. In the hope of somewhat alleviating the problems that Italy and Greece are having the EU has proposed a change in the overall policy. The EU is in search of a sustainable policy, because the current one will not last and has failed thus far.
Two options for change have been proposed:
1) Amend the current policy to better help countries that are struggling
2) Get rid of the current policy completely and change it to one where migrants could be more evenly distributed throughout EU countries.
There has been issues with both options--some countries like Italy and Greece would like it if a new policy was instated and allowed for even distribution, but other countries would rather keep the current policy, which allows them to send migrants out of their country.
No decision has officially been made yet, but the EU will need to figure out a strategy soon because Greece and Italy simply cannot keep up with the amount of migrants entering any longer.
