Just this weekend, Tim Berners-Lee also known as the inventor of the Internet has announced his next project concerning the information sharing giant that is the web; Solid. Lee's own web browsing system that he has been working on for the past few years. the point of Solid is that it will give access to services like Google and Facebook without the need for the User to give over private information. The key part of Solid is the PODs (basically a USB drive) that when plugged into your computer or device will give you complete control over personal data and control over who can access it.
Lee explains that the point of Solid is to completely disrupt the web User/Provider relationship, he specifically sites Facebook among these as an example of gross misuse of User data for targeted ads and hacking of user of accounts.

I think this could prove to be an important development concerning the internet as it has become the greatest exchange of knowledge and information in our history. It's important that as Users we understand the state of the Internet; who has my data? what are they doing with it? these are the questions we need to have answered and sadly most people seem not to know. Facebook, again, this weekend was hacked along with 50 million people's personal accounts, to me it seems like something like Solid is crucial for the future of a free and open Internet.
