According to this article by NPR, hackers stole about $59 million worth of cryptocurrency from the Japanese exchange Zaif. For many individuals and other companies, this act has raised even more concerns about cryptocurrency risks and the general lack of cyber-security throughout the world. As the writer of the article, Kimmelman, quoted from Fortune "...one reason (major hacks) why professional money managers have largely steered clear of the market even as individual investors piled in".The article also points out how this is the fifth large-scale hack to happen in virtual currency. It's unclear what the state of cryptocurreny will look like even a few years for now, but my guess is that hacks with always remain a high threat.
