Gay Zimbabwe teacher resigns after death threats

https://www.bbc.com/news/world-africa-45665906

Neal Hovelmeier, a teacher at an all boys school in Zimbabwe, recently came out to his students this past month. It came to Mr. Hovelmeier’s attention that former students felt intimidated by the homophobic atmosphere of the school, so he wanted to be open about who he was. However, Zimbabwe is a nation that has laws against homosexuality. Once Hovelmeier was out, parents became upset by the situation; they believed someone in the gay community had no business being a role model to teenage students that looked up to him. Some of the parents then hired a lawyer, and threatened legal action against Hovelmeier due to the laws against homosexuality. Unfortunately, Hovelmeier made the decision to resign from the school since he began to receive death threats against him and his pets.
