Alcohol and Drug Consumption in Sierra Leone

This article mentions the drugs in Sierra Leone. I learned three things from this article: 1. The basic premise is that drugs are illegal. 2. Many people have never used drugs. 3. Sierra Leone’s climate is ideal for growing marijuana. When I read this article, I realized one of the reasons why soldiers could use a ton of drugs during the civil war. In the civil war of Sierra Leone, many children were used as soldiers, and the adults used a ton of drugs such as marijuana and cocaine to control child soldiers. At first, I thought they import these drugs illegally from other countries but actually, they are cultivated as marijuana. That’s why they could use a ton of drugs during the civil war. This article did not mention cocaine, but the United Nation released a report a few years ago, and it says that Sierra Leone is used as a transit place to carry the drugs from South Africa to Europe. I’m not sure that Sierra Leone was used as a transit place before the civil war, but it might happen, so I can think they had easy access to the drugs such as cocaine. Surprisingly, mass consumption of drugs in the civil war was connected to climatic and environmental factors and geographic factors.
