Haiti has experienced record kidnappings this year, and are currently ranked number one for most kidnappings per capita in the world. The director if Haiti's National Human Rights Defense Network even spoke of the lack of safety in Haiti because it doesn't matter who or where you are located in the country. The group that was kidnapped on Sunday included 16 U.S. citizens some of which were part of the Christian Aid Ministry. Despite the clear knowledge of the U.S. citizens being held captive, our state department released a statement concluding they, "have nothing additional to offer at this time." It is believed that these missionaries are being held by a group called 400 Mawozo, who have been known for kidnapping people with open religious affiliations. Haitian officials are expecting the group to issue a ransom demand, as it is common in the country for criminals to receive money and then let the victims go unharmed. At this time, there have not been any demands for the missionaries and their family members.
