Iran's Mazandaran providences' crime prevention deputy has issued a letter mandating that local laboratories report women who have positive pregnancy tests. Iran says that reporting positive pregnancy tests will help prevent "criminal abortions." Abortion in Iran is only legal under certain conditions; the woman must be married and giving birth needs to endanger the life of the mother/child or the child has to have severe mental/physical disabilities. In Iran over 300,000 illegal abortions are performed every year. Women who get pregnant from extramarital affairs have no legal options for abortion and are forced to turn to unsafe options. Conservatives in Iran are also trying to require a medical team, a judge, and two "faqihs" (religious experts), to give approval for the abortion to be legal. These laws show how Iran has no real care for women's rights and just wants to increase the population of the Islamic Republic.
