G20 pledge climate action but make few commitments

G20 summit was held in Rome on 30-31 October. The leaders of the economically developed countries have agreed to pursue efforts to limit global warming with “meaning and effective actions”. The G20 group, made up of 19 countries and the European Union, accounts for 80% of the world’s emissions. But the agreement from the G20 summit in Rome made few concrete commitments.  US President Joe Biden said that there were a series of very productive meetings at the summit, but he also said China and Russia basically didn’t show up on matters of the climate, which was “disappointing”. Italian Prime Minister Mario Draghi mentioned that all of the G20 countries are committed to reaching the target to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as much as possible by the mid-century. However, China and Russia have pushed that target out to 2060. Since 31 October, COP 26, which will see delegates from nearly 200 countries gather to discuss cutting carbon emissions, has taken place. Whether firm targets will be set during COP26 is gaining a lot of attention.
