Despite clear opposition from the United States, Germany and Russia seem to be proceeding with a pipeline project, called The Nord Stream 2. If successful, it would double exportation of oil by Russia into Germany from a recently discovered oil reservoir in Siberia. The U.S. argues that the 11 billion dollar pipeline would divert natural resource traffic away from the transit-dependent Ukrainian economy, with the potential to destabilize that region. In addition, the pipeline would provide an opportunity for Russia to bring surveillance equipment into the military-sensitive region of the Baltic and blackmail a pipeline-dependent Germany for political compliance. Yet the project could provide much needed jobs and energy in Germany, and it appears it will go into effect very soon.
