Surubaya church attacks: Indonesian family of bombers 'had been to Syria' by Jesus Ponce

The Islamic State group has claimed the attacks, which killed at least 13 people on Sunday. A mother along with her two daughters, blew themselves up at a church, while her husband and two sons targeted 2 more churches. The National police chief said they belong to an IS-inspired network, Jemaah Ansharut Daulah (JAD).

The police also stated that the family was among the hundreds of people returning from Syria. The bombings are the deadliest in Indonesia in more than a decade.

This piece is a great example of how radical ideas can reach people across the world. A whole family carried out an attack on innocent people. Again, an entire family decided to kill civilians. If we recall back to our terrorism lecture, this family was sane. They weren't going crazy or anything. They believed their actions had a purpose. It's amazing how radical ideas can persuade an entire family to carry out such vicious attacks. I just find it sad they they all believed these people needed to die. Especially in a place that was sacred to them. What is the world coming to when you can't even go to your holy place to express your religion in peace? I'm more curious to know as to why they decided to join JAD. Were they victims of some sort?

Terrorism is a tricky subject. We will never know the root cause because we can't put ourselves in their shoes.
