Hollis Esposito “Where Did Ireland Go? Abortion Vote Stuns Those on Both Sides"

Summary:

On May 27, 2018, Dublin, Ireland voters swept away a ban on abortion. In a short span of time, Ireland has gone from being a bastion of social conservatism in the West to a place that embraces positions that many would not have accepted as right. The culture of silence and deference to religious authority that used to be Ireland is now replaced with leaders of liberal values. The nation of 4.8 million people have experienced some of the fastest social and economic changes in the world. In just 30 years, Ireland has gone from being a poor and deeply Roman Catholic country to one that has increased growth rates and has a gay man as the prime minister. In 2015, Ireland accepted another popular vote to approve same-sex marriages. These votes are showing that Ireland is a progressive nation.
