Matthew Wagner-China's first domestically-made aircraft carrier begins sea trials

This article from Fox News discusses China’s new aircraft carrier. This is china’s second aircraft carrier but the first to be produced by China. Their other aircraft carrier is a refurbished Russian aircraft carrier that has been plagued with problems. The new carrier is conducting early sea trials to access how its mechanical systems work. It is a steam turbine power plant which lacks advantages of nuclear carriers such as the US. The major disadvantage is length the carrier can be at sea, but Chinese media reports that a nuclear carrier is in development. This is big news since having a working aircraft carrier or even a small fleet of carriers will better allow China to project its military power. This will help them greatly in the South China Sea which is a contested area that the US has been involved in. Carriers will help the Chinese fleet in the region better face off against US ships. China hopes to have this carrier outfitted with its compliment of fighters by 2020.
