"Irish voters just rejected an abortion ban. But there was a time when they couldn't buy contraception"

Timea Mozsi

This article is mainly about abortion rights in Ireland. But they also go into some detail about the past few decades of legislation development starting off with mentioning the newest Prime Minister, Leo Varadkar, who is gay and biracial. It was interesting to read that they said that this reality has turned into a societal norm to the extent that it is “almost uninteresting” at this point.

In yesterday’s referendum, 66.4% voted to repeal the Eighth Amendment which was not allowing abortion. There was only one county that voted otherwise, and they are “rural and religiously conservative Donegal in northwest Ireland”. The article mentions that there are women that got abortions before it was legal and are serving up to 14 years in jail.

Other interesting points mentioned about changes in legislation were the legalization of contraceptives in 1979, homosexual acts decriminalized in 1993, divorce was legalized in 1996, same sex-marriage in 2015, and now abortion in 2018.
