Hollis Esposito “‘The whole island felt it’: Hawaii rocked by historic earthquake as new lava flows threaten homes”

Summary:

On May 4, the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii erupted causing residences to evacuate the area. Kilauea is the youngest and most active volcano on Hawaii island. The lava has been oozing out from fissures that opened up during the eruption. From the eruption, the air is becoming polluted with noxious fumes and officials are worried that it could be a huge threat to public health. Kilauea erupted first on Thursday and sent lava and clouds of steam into the environment causing residents to flee. Along with the threat of lava, the residents were also being exposed to fires and dangerously high levels of sulfur dioxide gas. According to records, the lava coming out during the eruption shot up as high as 100 feet into the air. As of Saturday, there have been at least seven fissure venters reported. After the eruption on Thursday, the island is still suffering shakes in regular intervals. On the bright side, the county civil defense agency reported that a threat of a tsunami was low following the earthquakes.
