For U.S. and China, Lasers and Missiles Heighten Military Tensions

In the beginning of this article it talks about the tension that is currently going on with the United States and China. Similar to what we have been talking about in class with the Cuban Missile Crisis, this on the other hand is not as serious but correlates. According to the article China flared at two military fronts when American pilots flew over the nation of Djibouti. After so they warned them about the possible deployment of missiles on an artificial island. Later it talks about how China’s military base in Djibouti has been aiming powerful lasers at American aircrafts. When asked about the use of lasers they responded that they were “completely inconsistent with the fact”. With all of this going on the article then emphasizes how this is showing the current pass and improvements of China’s military power. According to China’s leader Xi Jinping has had a mission to improve their military. Ironically when asked about their weapons on the island a representative of China said they were for defense and intended “to safeguard China’s sovereignty and security”. With to me sounds very similar to the Cuban missile crisis when they responded that the weapons were for defensive purposes. Although, they do have missiles there it was also stated that, “the relevant deployment targets no one” which was a relief to hear. Another important part to consider would be that other countries have claimed this area such as Vietnam and the Philippines. However, from China’s renovations that started in 2013 they clamed it as their own area.
