Catalan Independence Leaders Given Lengthy Prison Sentences by Spanish Court

In 2017, the people of Catalonia, a Spanish autonomous region, overwhelmingly voted to split from Spain, however, they never went through with it due to intervention from the Spanish federal government. Under the Spanish Constitution, succession is an act of treason, and several leaders from the Catalan independence movement were arrested and put on trial for charges including rebellion, disobedience, and misuse of public funds. They were found guilty, a decision supported by Prime Minister Pedro Sรกnchez.
