Japanese Emperor Enthronement

Although Emperor Naruhito began his reign in May, the formality process of him becoming emperor will take place soon. His formal process was delayed in respects to the victims of Typhoon Hagibis and the 80 people who died because of it. There is a celebration to honor victims and their families.

During the Emperor's enthronement, he will pardon a half million people who have been convicted of petty crimes. The emperor will do the Ceremony of Accession, which is a 6.5m-high ascension to the throne in a ceremonial garb. His wife will sit on the adjacent throne and the ceremony will include the sacred treasures - an ancient sword and jewel - that symbolize imperial power. The ceremony will last 30 minutes and will be concluded with an address by Japan's Prime Minister. This is the first enthronement ceremony in twenty-nine years.
