This story exhibits the differences in individualistic freedom between the United States and Iran. An Iranian Instagram star named Sahar Tabar was arrested for crimes including blasphemy and instigating violence. She is a 22 year old who attracted social media attention for her videos and pictures that reflect a zombie like Angelina Jolie. Tabar claimed that she has undertaken multiple surgeries to resemble the Hollywood star. The images show her with sunken cheeks, plump lips, and an upturned nose that mimic Angelina Jolie. Over time, she revealed that her appearance mostly consisted of makeup and digital editing. Her creation was more of an art form and a way of expressing herself on social media with a unique look.
Tabar was arrested after there were complaints made about her and the posts she was releasing on Instagram. Her account was then deleted off of the social media platform. She was accused other things including disregarding the country’s dress code and encouraging younger citizens to commit corruption. She is not the first Iranian influencer or fashion blogger that has been arrested for breaking the laws. In the United States, people may have disagreed or disliked the posts from this woman, but she would not have broken any laws. In this country, she would be free to express herself in many ways, especially when it comes to art forms. As we have discussed the laws and dress code for women in Iran, it saddens me to see this woman punished for something due to strict religious codes. While many women are comfortable by the laws of Middle Eastern countries, others struggle to find ways to express themselves in an “appropriate” way.
