Venezuela denied the entry of Guatemala's president-elect, Alejandro Giammattei, into their country on Saturday. Giammattei headed to Venezuela to meet with Juan Guaido, who is Venezuela's opposition leader to President Nicolas Madura. Venezuela stated that Giammattei was denied entry because he broke normal protocol followed by heads of state. Instead of entering the country as the well known president-elect of Guatemala, Giammattei tried entering as a private citizen with an Italian passport. Guaido traveled to the airport where Giammattei entered to greet him their since he could not enter the country. When Giammattei arrived at the airport, he was escorted to a gate and placed on a plane returning to Guatemala. Guaido slammed the Venezuelan government's decision and aggressive diplomatic action in turning Giammattei away.
