A mysterious oil spill contaminated numerous beaches in northeastern Brazil. The president, Jair Bolsonaro, told journalists that this oil spill might have been a result of illegal activity. Also, he stated that the oil was neither produced nor traded in Brazil. This leads him to believe that it came from other country. The environmental minister of Brazil said that there was more than 100 tons of oil sludge collected from the beaches.
Both the navy and state-controlled oil company (Petrobas) stated that the oil was produced abroad after an investigation last month. The spill was reported to have contaminated the coastline across eight states. At this time, there is no concrete evidence on where the oil spill came from or who dumped it into the ocean. With a state-owned company, I do not fully believe the claims of Petrobas. After the “unknown” fires in the Amazon, I have suspicion over the claims of the president.
