As the pandemic arrived last spring in the US, a wave of hate against Asian Americans arrived with it. T The hate crimes include racial slurs and incidents targeting Asian Americans. Recently there was a mass shooting in Atlanta at a spa that resulted in 8 deaths, with a majority of them being Asian American women. The Center for the Study of Hate and Extremism released findings that there has been an 149% increase in hate crimes reported to police within 2019 and 2020 against Asian Americans. The striking thing about these statistics is that overall hate crimes have decreased by 7%. This means that the majority of hate crimes currently happening are against the Asian population. There is also a separate group, Stop AAPI Hate, that recorded nearly 4,000 hateful incidents during the first year of the pandemic. These numbers reveal the increased trend of anti-Asian hate during the pandemic, but also these numbers likely do not represent a fraction of actual incidents. Although not mentioned frequently enough, there was a spike in racist terms like “China virus” and “Kung flu” through Donald Trump’s presidency. Overall, it has been shown that presidential statements have correlated to the increase and decrease of hate crime.
