Tanzania has given a hero's burial to President John Magufuli, who died earlier this month after denying the dangers of COVID-19. Magufuli was one of Africa's most prominent COVID-19 skeptics and even though the Tanzanian government announced that Magufuli died of heart failure, opposition leaders believe the he died of complications from COVID-19. Last year, Magufuli said that three days of national prayer got rid of COVID-19 from Tanzania and even discouraged Tanzanians from wearing face masks and getting vaccinated. At his funeral, many talked about Magufuli's pugnacious style of leadership and action against corruption. However, there are critics to his legacy, saying that his rule reduced fundamental freedoms of expression and assembly.
