The E.U. on Monday announced that they are imposing sanctions on China for human rights violations against Uyghurs and other individuals in Xinjiang. The sanctions will hit four officials tied to the arbitrary detention and mass internment of Turkic Muslims in Xinjiang with travel bans and asset freezes. The sanctions also are aiming at the region's public security bureau. However, the E.U. does not include Chen Quanguo, which the U.S. sanctions last year targeted. Critics of the deal questioned why Europe was increasingly connectng itself to authoritarian China rather than tackling issues such as mass detention and forced labor in Xinjiang.
