According to a Pyongyang diplomat, North Korea sees no reason to return to nuclear talks with the United States despite efforts made by the Biden administration. Since the middle of February, the Kim Jong Un regime has received emails and phone calls from the United States at the North's United Nations mission in New York and other avenues. A statement from Choe Son Hui, Pyongyang's first vice minister of foreign affairs said: "It will only be a waste of time to sit with the U.S. as it is not ready to feel and accept new change and new times. We make it clear that we won't give it such opportunities as in Singapore and Hanoi again."
It will be fascinating to see how the Biden administration handles North Korea. As history has shown that most U.S. presidents have not made much progress with North Korea and their nuclear weapons. As we discussed in class, North Korea potentially striking Japan and South Korea could leave to an arms race and nuclear proliferation. One of the few ways I see the situation with North Korea changing is if the United States can get China to stop supporting North Korea with materials. I guess only time will tell what will happen.
