Covid-19: Ireland suspends use of Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine

The National Immunization Advisory Committee recommended the suspension of the Oxford-AstraZeneca vaccine after reports of serious blood clotting events in adults in Norway. The World Health Organization has said that there was no link between the vaccine and the increase risk of developing a clot however, the Irish Minister for Health, Stephen Donnelly, said this is just a 'precautionary step'. There have already been more than 110,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine administered in Ireland, roughly 20% of all doses given to date. There have been no reports of clotting events in Ireland similar to those seen in Norway but they chose to suspend the use at the moment. Although Ireland has admitted to choosing to suspend the vaccine as precautionary, they also have admitted that it may be an over reaction. The public health agency in Ireland still encourages their citizens to get their COVID-19 vaccine when they are asked to do so.
