Italy imposes lockdown measures as cases spike across Europe

Italy has imposed new restrictions to stop the third wave of COVID, a year after the first national lockdown at the start of the pandemic. Prime Minister Mario Draghi warned that Italy was facing a "new wave of contagion" which has more infectious variants of the coronavirus. Other European countries are also experiencing increased levels of the coronavirus. For example, Prime Minister Viktor Orban of Hungary believes that this will be the most difficult time since the beginning of the pandemic in terms of having the proper amount of hospital beds and breathing machines, as well as mobilizing nurses and doctors. Also, France has the highest numbers of hospitalizations since November. Italy has been relying on a color-coded system of restrictions that has been implemented to smother further outbreaks in order to keep the country open, however it does not see to be working with new cases rising. Massimo Galli, one of Italy's top virologists, says that there is an illusion that the arrival of the vaccines will drastically reduce the necessity of drastic closures, however that is not the case.
