Ai Weiwei, who was consulted on the design for the Beijing National Stadium, criticizes the Chinese Communists Party for using the Stadium for what he believes is solely for capital gain and puts the security of Chinese athletes at risk. He openly criticizes the International Olympic Committee, or the IOC for advocating for authoritarians and business rather than being neutral on global political issues, chasing money rather than what's right. He feels as if what he built to represent how "freedom was possible" has been muddied as China takes steps backwards from what he thought would bloom into a democratic and free state.
