China and Egypt Seek Closer Ties

In a meeting, this Saturday, Chinese leader Xi Jinping said that China and Egypt “share similar visions and strategies in defending their own interests”. After all, the two nations have and likely will support each other on core issues and concerns. In 2017, the Egyptian government arrested dozens of Uyghur students studying at Al-Azhar University and deported them to China amid their crackdown on Muslim minorities in the Xinjiang region. During the pandemic, Egypt received several free shipments of Chinese-made Sinopharm coronavirus vaccines.

Xi is also holding meetings with the leaders of other authoritarian countries who are anxious to strengthen relations with China, many of which identify with its strict, one-party model. These include the leaders of Kazakhstan, Turkmenistan, Serbia, Ecuador, and Qatar.
