Russian Aircraft in Eastern Syria

On Tuesday February 15, US fighter jets and other coalition aircraft escorted three Russian aircrafts out of Syrian skies. Two Tu-22 Backfire bombers flew a Russian aircraft across Iraq into the Eastern Syria Security Area without giving any advance notice that they were doing so. After US warned Russia, Russia still continued on. That led to US F-16s and coalition aircraft flying close by the Russians until the were clear of the area. The Russians did this again 6 hours later, flying a cargo aircraft and a military jet across the same area.

Even though this did happen during the tension between Russia and Ukraine, US officials do not believe that this event is not related to the tension at all.
