Russia Attacks Ukraine, Drawing Broad Condemnation
With Russia now invading Ukraine, many Ukraine citizens are now in danger. As many reports coming out of Kharkiv of the city being bombed in the early morning. There is already an early estimation of a few hundred Ukrainian soldiers being killed in the fight, but no confirmation. Russia claims to only target military instillations and hasn’t attacked any cities. Earlier in the week Russia recognized the independence of Donetsk and Luhansk. With the recognition of these two independents, many satellite images show Russia completely surrounding Ukraine and could possibly lead a large invasion. There are many moving pieces within this conflict. There is Russia on the offensive trying to regain some or all of Ukraine, may foreign actors supporting Ukraine by putting sanctions on Russia. Since Ukraine is not involved in NATO, there is likely to be no military help from other counties. This will certainly change if Russia does take over Ukraine, then Putin will be met with several NATO allies, which will also drag in the U.S. Some very uncertain times ahead. One thing that is interesting is the media coverage around this. Many countries about of NATO, see this move from Russia as ‘the darkest hour’ in europe
since WW2. While Russia sees this as a cleansing from ‘Nazi’ leaders in the west. Interesting to see how different countries view this, although Russia’s claims are obviously propaganda and are trying to justify the actions to the citizens of Russia.
