Around half of the 20 presidents, prime ministers, heads of state and royalty set to attend the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing Winter Olympics are from authoritarian countries. Leaders of major democratic powers such as Britain, Australia and Canada are joining a U.S. led boycott of the Games. Others have also declined invitations using reasons such as the pandemic or Covid-19 protocols. The attendance of leaders like Russian President Vladimir Putin sends out an image of China's increasing distance from the West.
