Following months of military buildup and brinkmanship along Ukraine's border, Russia is increasing pressure on its former Soviet ally, threatening to destabilize Europe and bring in the US.
Since last year, Russia has been tightening its military grip around Ukraine, accumulating tens of thousands of troops, equipment, and artillery on its borders. US intelligence experts have warned that a Russian invasion could be imminent as a result of the actions.Whirlwind diplomatic efforts to reduce tensions have failed to yield results in recent weeks.
Moscow has denied that it is contemplating an attack, instead claiming that NATO's assistance for Ukraine is posing a rising threat to Russia's western flank. An increase in shelling in eastern Ukraine, as well as a vehicle explosion in separatist-controlled Donbas, has raised suspicions that Moscow is inflaming the situation to justify an invasion.
