Mexican Border Arrests Hit New Record Last Year

With the pandemic in full swing, inflation skyrocketing, an interesting statistic came out. Under the new Biden administration, the number of arrests on the southern border in the U.S hit a new record high. This number is hovering around 1.9 million and reflects an upsurge in attempted border crossings. The data came out in a recent court case. This court case regards the trump era policy “Remain in Mexico”. This order under the trump administration made it illegal for those seeking asylum in the U.S to live in the U.S while waiting for the ruling on their asylum status. The Biden administration repealed it and then two states went in with a lawsuit in attempts to keep the policy in place. The federal judge given the case was sided with the states, and had the policy reinstated. Now, the pandemic complicates things. Biden although the one to disagree with the policy, seemed ok with the judges’ decision. He and well as Trump, used the justification of Title 42. Title 42 allows for the remain in Mexico policy to stay in place because of the pandemic. With that, with the almost 2 million arrests in 2021 only about a 5th of them were entered the U.S. This is very interesting to me, as I would expect Biden to take a 180 from trumps immigration policies.
