Over this past weekend rapper 21 Savage was detained by ICE
for overstaying a Visa in the United States. He moved to the United States when
he was just 12 with his parents, something that was out of his own control.
Since coming to the U.S. he has gained fame, created literacy programs in
Atlanta, and started a family. He tried to re-apply for a visa in 2017 but
never received one. People are saying that because of the positive impact he
has had on Atlanta, Georgia he should not be deported. The rappers’ fame is
drawing light to immigration as a whole. His circumstances are very similar to
many of the illegal immigrants in this country. Immigrants have a lower rate of
crime and higher rates of creativity and entrepreneurism than natural born
American citizens. It may seem silly to get so worked up over a rapper, but
this may be the push that many Americans need to start paying attention to
American immigration policies.
